Brazil Senate Approves National Registry of People Convicted of Violence Against Women

Presidential sanction would launch a single database to let security agencies share offender data in real time.

Overview

  • The Federal Senate, which approved the measure Tuesday, sent the unchanged text from the Chamber to the president for sanction.
  • Only people with final criminal convictions will be listed for crimes such as feminicide, rape including of a vulnerable person, sexual harassment, stalking, bodily injury against women, and psychological violence.
  • The database will store name, ID numbers, parents’ names, home address, photo, fingerprints, and the crime, while keeping the victim’s name confidential.
  • The Union will run the system to link federal, state, and Federal District security bodies, helping police track offenders and support protective measures.
  • Records remain until a sentence ends or at least three years, and the law takes effect 60 days after publication if it is sanctioned.
