Overview
- The Presidency sanctioned two laws on July 14, 2026, publishing Lei nº 15.468 to add political education and citizenship rights to the national curriculum and Lei nº 15.467 to create an annual National Week of Ethics and Citizenship.
- Lei nº 15.468 amends Article 26 of the 1996 Law of Guidelines and Bases of Education to require that schools address political education during studies of social and political reality.
- The National Week of Ethics and Citizenship will be held every first week of May and tasks public bodies, schools, civil society groups and broadcasters with promoting ethical values and anti-corruption actions.
- The statutes set content goals — such as understanding social organization, exercising citizenship and democratic participation — but do not specify which grades will cover the topics or the required profile and training of teachers.
- Because the LDB provides national guidelines while states and municipalities run schools, local education secretariats and regulators must now define the timing, materials and teacher qualifications, a process likely to shape classroom practice and public debate.
