Brazil Launches Third Tamandaré Frigate, Cunha Moreira

Overview

• The Brazilian Navy launched the frigate F202 Cunha Moreira in Itajaí on Friday, June 26, 2026, in a ceremony attended by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
• The 107.2-meter ship displaces about 3,500 tonnes, carries roughly 130 crew and is designed for 5,500 nautical miles of range and speeds up to 25 knots.
• Cunha Moreira is fitted with hull-mounted sonar, multifunction radar, electro-optical and infrared sensors, a helicopter hangar and a layered weapons fit that includes anti-ship missiles, vertical-launch anti-air missiles, torpedoes and a 76 mm rapid-fire gun.
• The Tamandaré program is built in Brazil at a Thyssenkrupp subsidiary yard under the Águas Azuis consortium managed by Emgepron, with work staged for sea trials and fitted-arms displays before full commissioning.
• Naval leaders say the class will strengthen patrol and defense of the Amazônia Azul, protect offshore resources and boost local jobs and skills as the fleet moves from launches to sea acceptance tests and final armament displays.
