Brazil Finalizes 2026 Closed Season for Caranguejo-uçá, Starting January 18

An interministerial order staggers no-take periods by state to protect the species during its reproductive andada and permits only pre-declared stock to be sold.

Overview

  • The national calendar runs from January 18 to April 6 with regionally sequenced windows and may extend to April 17–22 if reproductive activity continues.
  • The first window, from January 18 to 23, covers Piauí, Ceará, Rio Grande do Norte, Paraíba, Pernambuco, Alagoas, Sergipe and Bahia, followed by additional windows on February 1–6, February 17–22, March 3–8 and March 18–23.
  • Amapá and Pará have an extra window on April 1–6, and Amapá’s state schedule confirms six periods beginning February 1 in alignment with federal rules.
  • Capture, transport, processing and sale are banned during each window, with exceptional commercialization allowed only for inventories declared to Ibama by the last business day before each period.
  • Federal and state agencies plan intensified inspections, offenders face penalties under Law 9.605/1998 and Decree 6.514/2008, and any live crab seized must be returned to the mangrove.
