Braves Place Drake Baldwin on 10-Day IL With Right Oblique Strain

An MRI showed a mild Grade 1 strain, so Atlanta will turn to Chadwick Tromp with Sandy León to handle catching as the club makes several roster moves.

Overview

  • The Braves announced Tuesday that catcher Drake Baldwin was placed on the 10-day injured list after leaving Monday’s game and returning to Atlanta for imaging.
  • Manager Walt Weiss said MRI results showed a mild Grade 1 right oblique strain, a favorable classification that nevertheless carries an uncertain recovery timetable for hitters.
  • Atlanta immediately selected Chadwick Tromp’s contract from Triple-A and will have Tromp and veteran Sandy León split starts behind the plate while Baldwin is sidelined.
  • The club also reinstated LHP Dylan Dodd, recalled RHP Víctor Mederos, optioned RHP J.R. Ritchie to Triple-A and released LHP Aaron Bummer as part of the same roster shuffle.
  • Baldwin had been a breakout star this season (.303, 13 homers, 38 RBIs through 48 games), and his absence, combined with Sean Murphy’s ongoing IL stint, leaves the Braves testing catching depth even as Ronald Acuña Jr. returns to the lineup.
