BP Confirms Gas-Condensate Find at Namibia’s Volans-1X Well

Initial tests indicate liquids-rich hydrocarbons, pending further analysis of commercial potential.

Overview

  • The exploration well encountered 26 meters of net pay in gas condensate-bearing reservoirs with strong petrophysical properties and no observed water contact.
  • Early laboratory work from two samples shows a condensate-to-gas ratio above 140 bbl/mmscf and a liquid density near 40° API, and the data are still being evaluated.
  • Volans-1X sits in PEL85 operated by Rhino Resources with 42.5%, alongside Azule Energy with 42.5%, NAMCOR with 10%, and Korres Investments with 5%, with BP holding 50% of Azule.
  • Drilled by the Deepsea Mira semi-submersible, the well reached 4,497.5 meters TVDSS and penetrated an Upper Cretaceous target.
  • The result is described as the Azule partners’ third significant 2025 discovery after Capricornus-1X in Namibia and Gajajeira-01 in Angola, with appraisal required before any development decisions in a region with limited offshore infrastructure.
