Boy, 7, Rescued After Falling Into Cistern at Bavaria’s Wülzburg Fortress

Police blame a failed metal grate over a courtyard well for the drop.

Overview

  • A metal cover on a well shaft gave way as the child stepped on it, sending him about four meters down into water in an underground cistern.
  • A visiting man jumped in and pulled the boy out, and police said both were unhurt.
  • Officers cordoned off the affected courtyard, and municipal works crews later secured the opening with grates, according to BILD.
  • Police said two cisterns in the inner courtyard are open from above and appear like bricked wells topped with metal grates.
  • The fortress near Weißenburg features rainwater cisterns added in 1806, and police could not say how deep the water was.
