Boy, 11, Seriously Injured in Metrolink Platform Fall as Separate Rail Death Disrupts Manchester Airport Links

Police investigations are underway with public appeals for footage.

Overview

  • Greater Manchester Police said the child fell between a tram and the platform at Crossacres as the vehicle moved off and remains in hospital in a stable condition with life-changing injuries.
  • The 999 call came at about 3:37pm on October 7 and an air ambulance, advanced clinicians, paramedics and fire crews attended before rushing the patient to hospital.
  • Detectives have opened an inquiry into the tram incident and urged witnesses to share dashcam or mobile phone video to help establish what happened.
  • In a separate case on October 8, British Transport Police reported a person died on the tracks at Gatley station, with the death not treated as suspicious and a file to be prepared for the coroner.
  • Both incidents caused hours of disruption on routes to Manchester Airport, with Metrolink services between Roundthorn and the Airport suspended and the Piccadilly–Airport rail line blocked before services were restored.
