Boxing Day House Fire in Bathurst Kills Man and Two Dogs

The cause remains under investigation following a hazardous response that hampered entry.

The new $60-million Riverview Recreation Complex is now under construction off Bridgedale Boulevard, next to the Mill Creek Nature Park and near a growing residential subdivision around Runnymeade Road. It is expected to be completed by fall of 2026. It will have a 10-lane swimming pool, indoor walking track and skatepark.
Patricia Bernard, the chief of Madawaska First Nation, is immensely proud of her mother, Margret Bernard, who became the community's first female chief 40 years ago.

  • A 911 call came in around 11:45 p.m. on Dec. 26, sending Bathurst firefighters to 555 Gosnell St. in the Roughwaters area.
  • Crews arrived to find the home engulfed, preventing entry to the first floor due to intense flames.
  • Firefighters briefly accessed the basement but were forced out by heavy fire and smoke.
  • After the blaze was knocked down, responders found the body of an adult male inside along with two dogs.
  • Officials have not released the victim’s identity, and the Bathurst Fire Department says the origin of the fire is still being determined.
