Both Men Found Guilty of Kieran Quilligan’s Murder in Cork

The jury delivered the convictions after a three-week trial that centered on forensic injuries, hundreds of CCTV clips and a text message referencing the attack.

Overview

  • Luke Taylor, 27, was found guilty this morning, a day after a separate jury verdict convicted 33-year-old Niall Long.
  • Both defendants were remanded in custody and face mandatory life sentences, with sentencing listed for 29 October.
  • Kieran Quilligan, 47, was last seen on 1 September 2023, and his skeletal remains were recovered on 29 January 2024 in jute bags in a ravine near Whitewell, Rostellan.
  • The Assistant State Pathologist testified that decomposition prevented establishing an exact cause of death, but multiple fractures were consistent with a severe assault using a hammer-like implement.
  • Prosecutors said Taylor lured Quilligan to a Cork city laneway after an alleged drug theft from Long, with evidence including a text from Long about a man being beaten and put in a car boot and 433 CCTV clips from 47 witnesses.
