Boston Pops Proceed With July 4 Fireworks Spectacular After Heat-Driven Access Delay

The change protects public health during a sweltering holiday that draws tens of thousands.

Overview

  • The free Boston Pops concert is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. with fireworks choreographed to live music set to start at 9:15 p.m. Saturday, and the program is expected to conclude around 9:30 p.m.
  • Officials delayed public entry to the Hatch Shell Oval lawn from the usual noon opening to 4 p.m. because of extreme heat, and public-health notices urged people to hydrate and use shade.
  • The performance lineup includes conductor Keith Lockhart with guest artists Chance The Rapper, Lainey Wilson, Trombone Shorty, appearances by Megan Hilty and Jane Lynch, and new works including a world premiere called "Spirit of America."
  • Organizers will add an on-site Revolutionary-themed drone segment during the 1812 Overture and run fireworks choreographed to the Pops’ live music, and event police said all attendees must pass security screening with a list of banned items.
  • City and state agencies coordinated crowd and transit plans, including MBTA free rides after 8:30 p.m., additional trains, boat viewing limits near the launch barge, extra EMS staff, cooling stations and road closures to aid safe arrival and dispersal.
