Boston Firefighters Rescue Delivery Worker After Downtown Roadway Grate Collapse

City inspectors are examining why a roadway grate failed near the Omni Parker House.

Overview

  • Shortly before 7 a.m. Friday, a delivery worker fell about 20 feet through a roadway grate in an alley off School Street in downtown Boston.
  • Firefighters executed a technical rescue, sending a firefighter down a 28-foot ladder and using a safety harness to bring the worker out.
  • The person was conscious and alert at the scene, and Boston EMS transported the patient to a hospital with injuries not considered life-threatening.
  • Officials said the grate likely “gave out,” and the roughly 3-by-10-foot opening has been secured with yellow police tape.
  • Boston Inspectional Services has opened an investigation into the collapse, and authorities have not released the worker’s name or age.
