Boston Dynamics Shows Production Atlas in First Public Gymnastics Demo

The display signals Hyundai’s push to shift the humanoid from research to factory work later this decade.

Overview

  • Boston Dynamics released video of the mass-produced Atlas performing a handstand and an L-sit, the first public demonstration of the production model.
  • Hyundai says Atlas uses reinforcement-learning full-body control that coordinates every limb to keep balance and generate strength during hard moves.
  • The production robot features tactile-sensing, human-scale hands and fully rotational joints, can lift up to 50 kilograms, and works from minus 20°C to 40°C.
  • Hyundai plans to send a development unit to its Georgia Metaplant for on-floor verification tests before targeting initial factory deployment in 2028 and parts-assembly tasks by 2030.
  • An analyst called the live demo a clear sign Hyundai is nearing commercial scale, even as Boston Dynamics says the shift from lab prototype to reliable factory machine remains difficult.
