Border Patrol Arrests Suspected Cartel Scout in Arizona Mountains

CBP says the coordinated operation will hinder cartel reconnaissance of law enforcement in the Yuma border region.

Overview

  • Yuma Sector agents arrested an alleged cartel scout on Feb. 18 in the Sierra Pinta Mountains after a Targeting and Intelligence Division probe with support from the AMO Yuma Air Branch.
  • A search of the hideout uncovered food, sustainment gear, and a solar panel that CBP says signaled a prolonged observation post.
  • CBP says the apprehension disrupts cartel efforts to track the movements of Border Patrol and Air and Marine Operations assets in the area.
  • The suspect was taken to Wellton Station for processing and will be referred to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for prosecution and eventual removal proceedings.
  • FOX 10 reports CBP is pursuing an 8 U.S.C. 1325 illegal-entry charge with potential sentencing enhancements for scouting, and Arizona’s Family reports the individual had two prior Title 42 expulsions.
