BOPE Kills Alleged Andaraí Trafficking Leader in Rio Operation

Police say the fugitive led a network tied to turf clashes, financing expansion through vehicle thefts.

Overview

  • Rodrigo Rosa Brasil, known as “Boneco do Andaraí,” was shot during a March 8 operation by BOPE and the Military Police intelligence unit in Morro do Andaraí and died after being taken to Hospital Municipal do Andaraí.
  • A second man identified as his security was wounded in the exchange of fire and hospitalized, with no condition disclosed.
  • Officers reported seizing a rifle and a pistol at the scene from the two men who were hit.
  • Brasil had been a fugitive since March 2019 after failing to return from temporary release while serving time for the 2008 killing of civil police officer André Gustavo Lopes da Rocha.
  • Authorities attribute to him leadership of an armed criminal group that recruited minors and bankrolled a vehicle‑theft ring active in Andaraí and Grajaú to fund expansion toward Morro da Cruz and Casa Branca, with the case now forwarded to the Capital Homicide Unit.
