Overview
- Bombay High Court judges Girish S. Kulkarni and Aarti A. Sathe, ruling Thursday, ordered daily checks between 1 am and 6 am to track odour, methane and other emissions at the Kanjurmarg landfill.
- The court directed the BMC to add more CCTV cameras and stream live feeds to its control systems to watch night operations and to keep continuous surveillance in place.
- The bench called the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board a “silent spectator” and told it to file an affidavit on actions taken and to support a statutory audit and vigilance inspection of the site.
- The BMC’s affidavit said it has posted night officers to inspect incoming waste, deployed a mobile air monitoring van, and will seek expert advice for a pre-monsoon forestation plan around the landfill.
- The judges added an MPCB officer and a petitioner representative to the night vigil team, ordered a simpler complaints portal with swift redress, and set the next hearing for June 11 as they pressed for the source of late-night odour spikes and better protection for workers and nearby residents.
