Body Recovered After Multi-Day Search of Hermosillo Canal

Recovery ends a prolonged rescue operation and hands the case to forensic authorities for identification and legal review.

Overview

  • Emergency crews launched searches after witnesses and municipal police reported an elderly man fell from a bicycle into the Lázaro Cárdenas canal during heavy rain on Saturday night.
  • Bomberos, Cruz Roja, Policía Municipal and Protección Civil coordinated ground teams, aquatic rescuers and drone overflights to scan several kilometers of the canal and inspect lagoons, debris and branches.
  • Rescuers and witnesses twice saw the person in the water but could not reach him because powerful currents and debris made an immediate rescue impossible.
  • Crew members located the body about 9.6 kilometers downstream on Tuesday morning and turned it over to the Fiscalía and the Servicio Médico Forense for identification and forensic procedures.
  • Authorities reiterated safety warnings to avoid crossing arroyos or flooded roads, to call 911 instead of attempting rescues and to heed official guidance during seasonal heavy rains.
