Body Recovered After Benbrook Lake Rescue Attempt

The recovery closes a three-day search slowed by high winds and hazardous underwater terrain.

Overview

  • Texas Game Wardens were called about 1:30 p.m. Saturday after witnesses said two men jumped from a vessel to help a child and one man went underwater and did not resurface.
  • Specialized teams from the Texas Game Warden Underwater Search and Recovery Team and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers recovered the man’s body around 9 a.m. Monday, officials said.
  • Search operations were repeatedly slowed by sustained high winds, choppy water and submerged trees on the lake bottom, forcing teams to suspend work Sunday night and resume with dive specialists the next morning.
  • State officials are withholding the man’s identity at the family’s request and said the Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office will complete identification and related procedures.
  • Authorities framed the case as one of several weekend water fatalities in Texas, cited 2025 boating statistics showing many victims lacked life jackets, and urged simple safety steps such as wearing U.S. Coast Guard–approved life jackets, avoiding alcohol while boating, supervising children and reporting unsafe activity.
