Body Found on Kilcreggan Beach Identified as Missing Ferry Passenger Mark Federspiel

Police said there are no suspicious circumstances following the June disappearance during a GourockDunoon crossing.

Overview

  • Police Scotland confirmed formal identification of the remains and said next of kin have been informed.
  • Federspiel, 64, vanished on June 15 from Western Ferries’ Sound of Shuna after going to the toilet, with his wife raising the alarm around 1pm seven minutes later.
  • A body was discovered on October 12 on Kilcreggan Beach on the Rosneath Peninsula, bringing an end to a four-month search.
  • June’s response involved HM Coastguard helicopters, RNLI lifeboats, nearby vessels and Police Scotland’s specialist units, with the search stood down on June 16.
  • There were no eyewitnesses and no CCTV covering the relevant side of the ferry, and family noted he was receiving treatment for a rare leukaemia that could affect balance; he was a retired US Navy diver known as “Mark the Shark.”
