Body Found Off Galveston During Coast Guard Training

Galveston Police are leading an active probe after the Coast Guard notified them following the discovery.

Overview

  • Coast guardsmen from the Houston Air Station found a partially submerged body near the Big Reef and the South jetty during a training exercise at about 10 a.m. on Saturday.
  • The Houston-Galveston Sector Coast Guard secured the scene and alerted local authorities, and the Galveston Police Department assumed investigative control.
  • Galveston Island Beach Patrol, fire crews, and EMS assisted at the scene and recovered the adult male’s body roughly 20 minutes after crews first reported seeing it.
  • Officials have released few public details about the person’s identity or cause and the medical examiner will determine cause and formally identify the deceased.
  • The Coast Guard regularly conducts training in the area so officials say follow-up reports from Galveston PD and the medical examiner will be needed to clarify circumstances and next steps.
