Body Found in Glacier National Park After Suspected Bear Encounter

Officials say the case could be the park’s first fatal bear attack since 1998.

Overview

  • Search crews found a body around noon Wednesday about 2.5 miles up the Mt. Brown Trail and roughly 50 feet off the path in dense timber.
  • The National Park Service said the injuries are consistent with a bear encounter and began wildlife and law-enforcement assessments of the area.
  • Rangers closed sections of the Mt. Brown route and nearby corridors connecting to Sperry, Snyder, and Lincoln Lake during the investigation.
  • Officials have not released the victim’s name and will wait 72 hours after notifying family members, leaving any link to missing hiker Anthony Pollio unconfirmed.
  • If investigators verify a bear killed the victim, it would be the first such death in Glacier since 1998, a rare outcome that has renewed advice to carry bear spray, hike in groups, and make noise.
