Overview

  • In a video posted Saturday on X, the opposition leader said he departed Uganda for unspecified engagements and did not disclose his location.
  • Wine said he fled a military search following the disputed Jan. 15 election, pointing to posts by army chief Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba that suggested he was wanted.
  • Ugandan police have said they are not looking for Wine, despite the army chief’s public assertions on social media.
  • Wine said he will lobby for international sanctions and named his deputy, Lina Zedriga, to lead the National Unity Platform in his absence.
  • Official results gave President Yoweri Museveni 71.6% and a seventh term due for inauguration in May, results Wine rejects as fraudulent, as observers and NGOs criticized the poll and AFP reported the army chief lauded deaths and mass arrests of opposition supporters.
