Bob Dylan’s Tour Sees Two Long-Serving Guitarists Exit and New Player Debut

Running with an unsettled guitar lineup, Dylan’s Long Hot Summer Tour faces unclear plans for permanent replacements.

Overview

  • Doug Lancio was absent from Dylan’s June 17 Santa Barbara show and was replaced onstage by jazz guitarist Julian Lage, who has filled in at several dates but has outside commitments.
  • Guitarist Bob Britt posted a now-deleted “Sayonara Bobby” message late June and then confirmed on June 29 that he left Dylan’s band of his own accord and will return to session work.
  • Chicago guitarist Joel Paterson made his debut with Dylan at the June 29 Moody Amphitheater show in Austin, handling the tour’s guitar duties that night.
  • Julian Lage has appeared as an intermittent substitute when available and shows scheduled elsewhere mean he cannot cover every date, leaving role decisions unresolved.
  • The quick reshuffle leaves bassist Tony Garnier and drummer Anton Fig as the most publicly stable members and raises practical questions about who will hold permanent guitar roles for the rest of the tour.
