Boating Grounding Near Starve Island Kills One and Hospitalizes Two
A rapid Coast Guard boat and helicopter response recovered three men with the grounded vessel remaining a navigation hazard.

- Coast Guard Sector Detroit watchstanders received notice early Saturday and launched a Station Marblehead Response Boat-Medium five minutes later and an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter at 3:42 a.m.
- Boat crews pulled two men from the water at about 4:20 a.m. and the helicopter hoisted a third, and all three were taken to hospitals in Cleveland and Port Clinton.
- One man was pronounced dead at 6:20 a.m. and the two survivors were hospitalized with one unconscious and the other suffering major injuries.
- Officials have not released a cause for the grounding and Coast Guard watchstanders issued a special marine information broadcast warning other mariners that the vessel remains on the rocks.
- The Coast Guard urged wearing properly fitted life jackets, monitoring weather and water conditions, and carrying reliable communications as crews and local authorities continue the response and any follow-up investigation.
