Boat Capsizes in Ganga Near Patna, Three Dead and Four Missing

Officials say a likely motor failure plus strong winds caused the capsize, triggering NDRF, SDRF search teams, district safety reviews, post-mortems and ongoing identification work.

Overview

  • A small country boat carrying about 14 farm workers overturned near Umanath Ghat while returning from Sultanpur Diara, leaving three people confirmed dead, four missing and seven rescued.
  • Local boatmen and residents carried out the first rescues before State Disaster Response Force and National Disaster Response Force teams arrived and expanded the search with divers.
  • Authorities and police cited strong winds and a reported motor malfunction as immediate causes and said overloading is being examined while recovered bodies were sent for post-mortem.
  • The three deceased were identified as Shravan Mahto (36), Neelam Kumari (30) and Kashi Kumar (15), and all passengers were residents of Masoomganj/Bind Toli who routinely crossed the river for agricultural work.
  • District officials have opened an administrative review of boat safety and enforcement after the May 28 incident, and survivors are receiving medical aid as search-and-recovery operations continue.
