BMW Unveils Neue Klasse i3 Sedan With 800-Volt Platform and Up to 900 km WLTP Range

The launch marks BMW’s shift to a dedicated EV architecture for its 3 Series lineage.

Overview

  • The first variant is the i3 50 xDrive with dual motors and all-wheel drive, producing roughly 463–469 hp and 645 Nm of torque.
  • BMW quotes up to 900 km on the WLTP cycle and up to 400 kW DC fast charging that can add about 400 km in roughly 10 minutes, while media cite an EPA-based projection near 440 miles with certification still pending.
  • Series production begins in Munich in August 2026, with initial deliveries slated for autumn 2026 in global markets and U.S. timing expected to extend into 2027.
  • A new multi-computer electronic architecture including the ‘Heart of Joy’ boosts computing power by around 10–20× versus prior systems, and the car supports bidirectional charging (V2L/V2H/V2G).
  • BMW teased an i3 Touring wagon and additional powertrain variants, while reports indicate the current i4 liftback will be phased out as the Neue Klasse lineup ramps.
