BMW Unveils Fifth‑Generation X5 With Five Powertrains and New iX5 EV

The global reveal signals BMW will roll Neue Klasse EV technology and design into its best‑seller while keeping petrol, diesel, hybrid and hydrogen options available for different markets.

Overview

  • BMW held a global reveal of the G65 X5 on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, confirming a full lineup that includes petrol, diesel, plug‑in hybrid, battery‑electric iX5 and a future hydrogen fuel‑cell variant.
  • The launch tops the range with the iX5 60 xDrive, which uses BMW’s sixth‑generation eDrive and an 800‑volt electrical architecture paired with a 144 kWh (US) / 141 kWh (EU) cylindrical‑cell battery, two motors and 425 kW (578 hp) combined output.
  • BMW claims WLTP driving ranges between about 645–845 km (401–525 miles) for the iX5 and says the pack supports very high‑rate DC charging up to roughly 460 kW and bidirectional charging, though WLTP figures may not match U.S. EPA numbers.
  • Despite Neue Klasse styling and electronics like the Heart of Joy control unit, the G65 uses an updated CLAR chassis so one body can carry five propulsion systems; that choice increases kerb weight for the iX5 (around 2,900 kg) and creates tradeoffs in efficiency and handling.
  • BMW will stagger market rollouts and production, with combustion models due in late 2026, PHEV and the iX5 arriving in 2027, the hydrogen iX5 in 2028, and initial U.S. assembly continuing at Spartanburg, South Carolina, shaping regional availability and buyer choice.
