BMW Orders Global Recall Over Starter Fire Risk in Cars Built 2020–2022

BMW attributes the defect to starter electromagnets that can wear or short-circuit, leading to overheating and possible fire.

Overview

  • The safety action spans 16 model lines across the 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, X3X6 and Z4 ranges fitted with starters produced between July 2020 and July 2022.
  • Country tallies confirmed so far include 24,732 cars in the UK, 197 in Ireland and 2,303 in Singapore, with a reported global total of roughly 575,000 vehicles.

  • U.S. coverage reported 87,394 affected vehicles and dealer repairs beginning March 24, 2026, following investigations into thermal damage incidents.
