BMW Orders Global Recall Over Starter Fire Risk Across 16 Models

The company expects little effect on results after last year's larger brake recall.

Overview

  • BMW announced on February 11 a worldwide safety recall covering a six-figure number of cars for a starter-related fire risk.
  • The defect is tied to a starter relay built from July 2020 to July 2022 that can wear, trigger a short circuit, overheat and potentially cause a fire.
  • Sixteen model lines are included, plus vehicles that received the faulty starter during later repairs, with trade outlet Kfz-Betrieb estimating about 575,000 affected worldwide.
  • Dealers will replace the starter and, on some models, the battery, and BMW advises drivers not to leave vehicles unattended after start-up.
  • Owners can check eligibility by VIN on BMW’s recall site, the repair is free of charge, and at least 4,000 vehicles are identified in France.
