BMW Launches European Pilot of Humanoid Robots at Leipzig Plant

BMW’s new Center of Competence for Physical AI will vet partners to guide staged trials toward a summer pilot.

Overview

  • BMW is collaborating with Hexagon Robotics to trial the AEON humanoid on high‑voltage battery assembly and component production at its Leipzig facility.
  • An initial AEON test ran at Leipzig in December 2025, with a further deployment scheduled from April 2026 ahead of a pilot phase planned for summer 2026.
  • The company has established a Center of Competence for Physical AI in Production to consolidate expertise and evaluate partner technologies under real factory conditions.
  • Hexagon says AEON was developed with a simulation‑first approach using NVIDIA’s Isaac platform and currently runs on Jetson Orin hardware with IGX Thor upgrades planned.
  • The Leipzig effort builds on BMW’s 2025 Spartanburg pilot with Figure AI, which reported support for more than 30,000 X3 vehicles and over 90,000 components moved in roughly 1,250 operating hours.
