BMW Keeps V8 in New X5 While Rolling Out Giant EVs and a Hydrogen Plan

The move shows BMW will offer combustion models plus high-capacity battery SUVs plus a planned hydrogen version to fit different markets and emissions rules.

  • BMW confirmed this week that a V8-powered X5 will remain in the new-generation line-up and an M Performance X5 M60 with a non-electrified 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 is expected next year.
  • Spy shots and company disclosures show an electric iX7 is in development for a 2027 debut and will share Neue Klasse hardware including an 800-volt electrical architecture and large cylindrical-cell battery packs similar to the iX5.
  • BMW’s high-capacity EVs are reported to use battery packs around 141–144 kWh with DC fast-charging capability up to roughly 460 kW, enabling long WLTP ranges though real-world EPA figures may differ.
  • The new X5 will launch in Australia with six-cylinder petrol and diesel models in late 2026 and arrive with BEV and PHEV versions in mid-2027, while an iX5 Hydrogen is slated for series production in 2028 using a Toyota-developed fuel cell made at Steyr.
  • BMW’s strategy keeps multiple powertrains to meet customer demand and manage fleet CO2: engineered updates to the S68 V8 let it meet tighter emissions rules and the company will target V8s to markets like the US and Middle East where demand remains strong.
