BMW Ends U.S. Run of G80 M3 With Limited Manual M3 CS Handschalter

The North America-only, rear-drive six-speed will be sold in very limited numbers as Munich moves to EV-only assembly and gasoline M3s pause.

Overview

  • BMW M confirmed on Saturday that this is the last model year for the G80 M3 in the United States and that the 2027 M3 CS Handschalter will serve as its limited farewell.
  • The Handschalter is a North America-only, rear-wheel-drive model fitted with a six-speed manual transmission, and it will open for orders in July with deliveries starting in the fall.
  • BMW and reporting list the Handschalter’s S58 engine at about 543 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque, describe it as the lightest G80 with roughly a 75-pound weight reduction in certain configurations, and say production will be “very limited.”
  • BMW has said Munich will convert to EV-only assembly by the end of 2027 and reporting places the next gasoline M3 (G84) in mid-2028, which would likely leave roughly an 18-month window with no new combustion-engine M3 available.
  • The Handschalter’s run-out role echoes a rare 2005 UK manual CS example and makes it especially significant to drivers and collectors who value rear-drive manuals as BMW shifts toward electric models.
