BMW Builds the Last Z4, Ending Its Current Roadster Line

Weak sales under stricter emissions rules left little case for a low-volume roadster.

Overview

  • BMW confirmed the final G29 Z4 has rolled off Magna Steyr’s assembly line in Graz, Austria, ending production of the two-seat convertible.
  • With the 8 Series Convertible winding down, the 4 Series is now the only convertible left in BMW’s lineup.
  • BMW has not announced a successor, and BMWBLOG reports a next-generation Z4 is not expected soon.
  • Z4 demand peaked in 2019 at 15,827 cars, fell to 9,744 in 2025, then ticked up 4.9% in early 2026 to 2,555 deliveries after a Final Edition signaled the runout.
  • The Z4 was built by contract manufacturer Magna Steyr, a model BMW uses for niche cars as EU CO2 limits and a shift to electrification make gas roadsters harder to justify.
