BMC Launches Odour-Control Plan at Kanjurmarg After Commissioner Inspection

The move signals a shift to time-bound fixes under pressure from a High Court monitoring panel.

Overview

  • The civic body, which Commissioner Ashwini Bhide inspected Wednesday, announced an immediate package to cut foul smells from the Kanjurmarg waste site.
  • The plan starts a green buffer with 15,000 trees in June to separate nearby homes from waste operations.
  • Odour control on site uses bio-enzyme sprays and 11 misting cannons, with bio-filters and scrubbers to be added at recycling and composting units.
  • Real-time air and odour tracking will include night teams and a 1 am to 6 am control room, plus public displays and a helpline for quick action.
  • Contractors must move material recovery units out of sensitive zones within seven to eight months to meet a 500-metre buffer, and the BMC will report progress to the High Court on June 11.
