Overview
- Deputy premier Bloyce Thompson, also minister of justice and agriculture, will become P.E.I.’s 35th premier at a Friday ceremony in Charlottetown.
- Rob Lantz resigned Thursday to pursue the Progressive Conservative leadership, complying with a requirement that an interim leader who intends to run must step down within 10 days of a convention call.
- The PC Party scheduled its leadership convention for Feb. 7, set a Dec. 24 deadline for candidates, and plans public forums in mid-January.
- The race currently includes Lantz and lawyer Mark Ledwell, who has been campaigning since spring and has endorsements from figures such as former premier Pat Binns and former PC leader James Aylward.
- CBC reports most sitting PC MLAs are expected to support Lantz, while many politicians from the Pat Binns era back Ledwell, as the province sees its third premier in a year.
