Black Lake Sturgeon Season Opens Under Six-Fish Cap, Rapid-Closure Rules

A strict six-fish limit reflects two decades of rehabilitation that now allow a carefully controlled public harvest.

Overview

  • Fishing opened at 8 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 7, with hours set for 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. daily through Feb. 11 unless the season closes earlier.
  • The season ends the moment the sixth sturgeon is registered or if five fish are taken by day’s end; otherwise it concludes at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 11.
  • Participants were required to register online in advance, anglers 17 and older must carry a valid Michigan fishing license, and DNR will announce any closure on the ice and by text.
  • Anglers must display bright red flags on shanties, report any harvest immediately, and register fish at the DNR trailer on the ice at the end of Zollner Road on Black Lake’s northwest side.
  • Registration may include internal organ checks and fin tissue collection for DNA or age verification, and last year’s season ended after 17 minutes, underscoring intense demand for the limited harvest opportunity.
