Black Lake Sturgeon Season Opens Saturday With Six-Fish Cap and Instant Closure Rules

A rebuilt sturgeon population allows a tightly controlled ice fishery shaped by two decades of conservation.

Overview

  • Fishing starts at 8 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 7, on Black Lake and runs daily from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
  • The season ends immediately when the sixth fish is registered or if five are taken by the end of any day, otherwise concluding at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 11.
  • Participants must register by the close of business Friday, Feb. 6, and anglers 17 or older need a valid Michigan fishing license.
  • Anglers must display bright red flags on shanties, notify DNR staff immediately after a harvest, and register fish at the on-ice DNR trailer for potential organ exams and fin tissue sampling.
  • Under Fisheries Order 240 the DNR may cancel up to 48 hours before opening for safety, and last year’s season ended after 17 minutes.
