BJP, Tipra Motha To Contest Solo in Tripura Tribal Council Election After Talks Fail

Voters will judge promises on the Tiprasa Accord in a race for control of Tripura’s main tribal governing body.

Overview

  • The BJP released a full 28-candidate list Tuesday after seat-sharing talks with Tipra Motha and the IPFT fell through.
  • Tipra Motha said it will run alone unless it sees concrete steps to implement the 2024 Tiprasa Accord, then published its own slate the same night.
  • The BJP inducted five Tipra Motha leaders and gave tickets to at least three of them, including Ananta Debbarma, Rajesh Debbarma and Soudagar Kalai.
  • Voting for the 30-member Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council is scheduled for April 12, with counting on April 17.
  • The council administers nearly two-thirds of Tripura and has 28 elected members plus two nominees, and Tipra Motha won 18 seats to the BJP’s nine in 2021.
