Overview
- On Monday, July 27, BJP councillors Satya Sharma and Satyapal Singh were elected unopposed as chairperson and deputy, completing the 18-member Standing Committee and restoring its authority.
- The Standing Committee is the MCD’s top financial body and must approve municipal projects, contracts, policy decisions, and any financial proposals above ₹5 crore.
- The panel had not met since March after both leadership posts lapsed, and the BJP’s 12–6 majority plus sole BJP nominations produced uncontested elections.
- Satya Sharma said her priorities include sanitation and solid-waste work, strengthening MCD hospitals and dispensaries, upgrading municipal schools, using technology for governance, and shoring up the corporation’s finances.
- Restoring the committee clears the way for stalled approvals, timely release of funds and project rollouts and puts legacy landfill cleanups and salary payments back on the local agenda.
