BJP and Congress File Candidatures as Manjalpur Bypoll Enters Campaign Phase

Voters will choose a successor to long-time MLA Yogesh Patel.

Overview

  • Both major parties formally filed nominations on Monday, July 13, and launched public campaigns in Vadodara for the July 30 by-election.
  • The BJP nominated former municipal councillor Satish Govindbhai Patel and opened an election office to present him as the grassroots successor to the late eight-time MLA Yogesh Patel.
  • The Congress nominated veteran Bhikhabhai Rabari and framed the contest as a referendum on local governance, focusing on flooding, roads, water supply and alleged corruption.
  • A total of 15 nomination papers were submitted by seven candidates, including additional BJP and Congress entrants, a Right to Recall Party nominee and an independent, with scrutiny set for July 14 and withdrawals due July 16.
  • Polling is scheduled for July 30 and counting for August 3, making the bypoll an early organisational test and a local indicator of voter mood ahead of the 2027 Gujarat assembly elections.
