Overview
- BitGo confirmed Tuesday that it will replace LayerZero with Chainlink’s Cross-Chain Interoperability Protocol for about $7.3–7.7 billion of Wrapped Bitcoin, making CCIP the exclusive cross-chain provider for WBTC.
- The shift raises the announced total of LayerZero-to-Chainlink migrations to roughly $14.5–$14.6 billion as other projects including Mantle, Kraken and Aave have already signaled moves to CCIP.
- Under the change BitGo will standardize WBTC on Chainlink’s Cross-Chain Token (CCT) standard while keeping operational controls such as token contracts, transfer rate limits and transfer settings under its own management.
- The migration was driven by security concerns after a $292 million exploit of a LayerZero-powered bridge earlier this year and reflects a move to CCIP’s messaging model that handles lock/release or burn/mint flows between chains.
- Concentrating major wrapped-Bitcoin traffic on a single provider could simplify interoperability but also raises systemic-risk and market-power questions for DeFi liquidity routing and for users who rely on cross-chain transfers.
