BitGo Korea Wins South Korean VASP Registration

The approval clears the legal path for institutional custody and transfer services in Korea under newly tightened VASP vetting and transfer-reporting rules.

Overview

  • South Korea’s Financial Intelligence Unit accepted BitGo Korea’s virtual asset service provider registration on Aug. 18, allowing the local unit to operate as a registered VASP in the country.
  • The registration permits custody and transfer services aimed at financial institutions and corporate clients but does not grant permission to run a won-based retail cryptocurrency exchange.
  • Hana Financial Group owns a 25 percent stake in BitGo Korea and SK Telecom holds 10 percent, with both named as strategic partners to support banking and digital-security functions.
  • Stricter VASP entry checks and tougher transfer-reporting rules took effect on Aug. 20, expanding regulator reviews to executives and major shareholders and lowering thresholds for Travel Rule checks between providers.
  • BitGo Korea’s approval addresses a shortage of compliant institutional custody options in Korea, yet the company has given no launch date or details on supported assets, fees, or insurance coverage, leaving market impact and customer uptake as key things to watch.
