Bison Tosses Yellowstone Visitor Into Air at Bridge Bay Campground

Yellowstone National Park opened an investigation to reinforce safety rules during the summer bison rut.

Overview

  • A bull bison charged through Bridge Bay Campground and hooked a man with its horn, flinging him about eight feet during an incident on July 10.
  • The man was walking with his young grandson when the attack occurred and the child escaped unharmed as bystanders distracted the animal so responders could reach the victim.
  • Photographer Mike MacLeod filmed the encounter and said the bull had been charging people and a pickup truck earlier in the campground before targeting the pair.
  • The injured man was transported to a hospital, underwent surgery, and family members told reporters he is expected to recover.
  • Park officials reiterated the 25-yard viewing rule, noted this is the second bison-related injury at Yellowstone in 2026, and said the investigation could lead to stepped-up outreach or enforcement.
