Bison Tosses Yellowstone Visitor Eight Feet at Bridge Bay Campground

The filmed attack left the man seriously injured and signals that rut-season bull aggression may prompt renewed park safety action.

Overview

  • A bull bison charged and hooked an older man with its horn at Bridge Bay Campground, flinging him about eight feet into the air while he walked with his grandson on Friday.
  • Bystanders, including photographer Mike MacLeod, ran at the animal to distract it and Yellowstone EMS reached and transported the injured man, who eyewitnesses and his grandson say remains in serious or critical condition.
  • Witnesses said the same bull had already charged children and a passing pickup before the attack, behavior that observers and reporting link to the bison rut, the June–September mating season when bulls grow more aggressive.
  • The National Park Service advises visitors to stay at least 25 yards from bison, has reiterated that guidance in recent coverage, and has not released a detailed public update about this specific incident as of Sunday.
  • This is the second reported bison-related injury at Yellowstone in 2026 and the incident could increase pressure for stepped-up NPS outreach or enforcement to reduce dangerous human–wildlife encounters.
