Bison Tosses Grandfather Eight Feet at Yellowstone Campground

Caught on video on July 10, the attack led to a bystander rescue, hospitalization, an NPS investigation, renewed warnings about rut-season aggression.

Overview

  • A bull bison at Bridge Bay Campground charged and launched a man about eight feet into the air on July 10.
  • Photographer Mike MacLeod recorded the encounter showing the bison chase the man around trees and hook him with a horn.
  • Bystanders drew the animal away, Yellowstone EMS took the injured man to a nearby hospital, and he later had surgery and is reported to be expected to recover.
  • The National Park Service confirmed the injury is under investigation and reminded visitors to stay at least 25 yards from bison during the June–September rut.
  • This is at least the second bison-related injury in Yellowstone in 2026 and it underscores how rut-driven aggression in campgrounds could drive stronger outreach, enforcement, or safety measures to protect visitors.
