Bison Tosses Elderly Tourist in Yellowstone Campground

Park officials have not released a formal incident report while video and witness accounts drive an active investigation into what triggered the animal’s attack.

Overview

  • A large male bison charged and hooked a roughly 65-year-old man at Bridge Bay Campground, tossing him about two to two and a half meters after an encounter captured on video on Friday, July 10.
  • The victim, identified in local reports as Carl Isom-McDaniel, was taken to hospital with multiple fractures and has undergone surgery and remains in recovery.
  • Photographer Mike MacLeod recorded the attack and said bystanders, led by him, distracted the bison so others could reach and assist the injured man until park emergency crews arrived.
  • Witnesses say a white pickup drove past the animal shortly before the attack and may have disturbed the bison, which observers described as visibly agitated and unusually aggressive for the season.
  • The National Park Service has only reiterated wildlife-distance guidance so far and is treating the case as an active matter while investigators review the viral video and eyewitness statements; experts note male bison can become volatile during the rutting season.
