Birmingham Man Jailed for 22 Years for Manslaughter of Teen After International Manhunt

Cross-border police work using CCTV plus phone data ended a two-and-a-half-year search.

Overview

  • Birmingham Crown Court sentenced Ishmael Farquharson, 34, on 17 September 2025 following a manslaughter verdict returned on 13 September.
  • He fatally stabbed 16-year-old Sekou Doucoure during a knife fight captured on CCTV at an Esso forecourt on Nursery Road in Hockley on 12 July 2022.
  • Jurors acquitted him of murder but found him guilty of manslaughter and possessing an offensive weapon, and the judge said his pursuit of the victim sought retribution and came close to murder, with two-thirds of the term to be served in custody.
  • Farquharson fled the UK immediately after the killing, was located in Spain, arrested on 23 January 2025, and extradited to stand trial.
  • The CPS highlighted cooperation with West Midlands Police, the National Crime Agency and Spanish authorities using CCTV and mobile data, while related convictions of Pierre Thomas and a youth were secured in March 2023.
