Birch Bay Fire Held to 35 Acres as Containment Rises to 43%

Coordinated ground and air tactics have allowed evacuations to be lifted.

Overview

  • Containment has increased to 43 percent while the fire remains at 35 acres and personnel were reduced to about 81 as crews focus on mop-up and reinforcing containment lines.
  • All evacuations have been lifted and residents are asked to stay away from the North Arm Road area because heavy equipment and firefighter traffic remain in place.
  • Water‑scooping aircraft, helicopters, engines and a hotshot crew are available to support ground crews and a Temporary Flight Restriction forbids drones over the incident area.
  • Federal and local officials are investigating the cause of the fire and the Superior National Forest will put fire restrictions in the Boundary Waters that allow gas or propane stoves but ban charcoal and wood fires.
  • The incident is managed jointly by the U.S. Forest Service, an Incident Management Team and local partners and crews will only declare full containment after a continuous control line surrounds the perimeter and all spot fires are extinguished.
