Bihar Seals Power Deal for Kajra Solar-Battery Plant After Phase-1 Generation Starts

The agreement locks in offtake from the state-owned solar-plus-storage plant to deliver dispatchable clean power.

Overview

  • BSPGCL signed an MoU with the North and South Bihar discoms to procure electricity from the 185 MW Kajra project with a 282 MWh battery system.
  • Phase one began commercial generation roughly 10 days ago after a July 1, 2024 work order and a December 31, 2025 grid connection, with a reported cost of ₹1,810 crore.
  • Officials describe the 282 MWh battery as the country’s largest at present, designed to store daytime solar for delivery during non-sunlight hours to bolster grid stability and meet RPOs.
  • A second phase under construction will add 116 MW of solar and 241 MWh of storage by January 2027 at an estimated ₹1,055 crore, taking the plant to 301 MW and 523 MWh.
  • Energy leaders say about ₹50,000 crore in investments are underway in Bihar’s power sector, noting recent public support for the proposed 2,400 MW Pirpainti thermal project.
