Big Grass Fire Burns 579,366 Acres and Is 34% Contained

Shifts of helicopters and supplies to an Owyhee forward base aim to speed firefighting as Red Flag warnings increase the chance of lightning starts.

Overview

  • The fire, which started from lightning on July 23, has scorched about 579,366 acres along the IdahoOregon border and was reported 34% contained in the Aug. 13 incident update.
  • Incident managers assigned roughly a thousand personnel plus 12 helicopters, VLATs, 15 hand crews, 34 dozers and dozens of engines to protect homes, grazing and timber stands.
  • Evacuation orders remain in force with 159 people recorded as evacuated and incident reports listing 315 residential and 420 other structures threatened.
  • A Red Flag Warning for dry lightning and gusty, erratic winds raises the risk of new starts and spot fires while crews focus on the southern flank near South Riddle Road and South Mountain.
  • BLM temporary closures, degraded regional air quality and forecasts for localized heavy rain create added hazards from flash floods and debris flows in burned and vulnerable terrain.
